Through a quirky palette of sounds used in unlikely combinations, Mome Raths provides for the listener an alternate reality. As the title would suggest (though not directly nodding at “Alice in Wonderland”), the acousmatic sounds within the piece connote abstract beings living within a universe different than our reality. At a few moments in the piece, we peer “through the lookingglass” into our own world briefly before plunging back down into this unconventional soundscape. Through a judicious use of pitched elements, a musical narrative unfolds which transports the listener into a world rich with musical gesture and peculiar timbral combinations.
’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Ouroboros, the ancient symbol of the snake eating its own tail, is often taken nowadays to symbolize self-reference and circularity. In this piece a small collection of sounds are used, which are referenced again and again, using differing temporal scales (sometimes occurring simultaneously). At certain key moments, even the entire piece up until that point is heard at a faster time scale. The central idea of the work stems from nested, self-referential (even fractal) recursions of sounds, which at once are both evolving and repeating. The center channel (in the 5.1 system) plays an integral part in the piece, serving as the mouth of the snake from which nothing can escape.
